It’s likely you’ve seen South Pacific performed on stage — maybe even right here in Saline. Perhaps you were part of the cast. Now, thanks to Fathom Events, the 1958 movie classic will once again be shown as intended, here at our own Emagine Theatre. [1,2,3]
- August 26 (Sunday), with showings starting at 2:00pm and 7:00pm
- August 29 (Wednesday), with showings starting at 2:00pm and 7:00pm
Plot summary on IMDb: “On a South Pacific island during World War II, love blooms between a young nurse and a secretive Frenchman who’s being courted for a dangerous military mission.” That said, this is a film that you go to see for the beautifully choreographed and richly performed musical pieces of an incomparable motion picture period. At the risk of affecting what you’ll hear in your head for the rest of the day, here are some reminders. [4,5,6,7]
- “Some Enchanted Evening”
- “There Is Nothin’ Like a Dame”
- “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair”
A lot has changed in the six decades that have passed since the premier of this version of South Pacific, not the least of which we’d have to say is the world stage on which it plays. Two years ago, Paul Schlienz wrote a review published on The Daily Voice that both looked at the original through a lens of time passed, and yet managed to hold onto the essense of the beauty that has not been lost since its creation. That’s the place to start before heading out to the theater later this month. [8]
As always, before finalizing plans, check the Emagine Entertainment website to verify show dates and times.
