You Should Get to Know former Saline Resident Webster Ruckman at Some Point in Your Memorial Day Schedule

May 28, 2018
Early this morning the sun also came up over the old section of Oak Wood Cemetery. That has surely been the case for the past 156 years, with or without parades, even before there was a Memorial Day. [1] Literally off the beaten path, on a bit of a hill, and with so many grave stones losing luster, some may ask if this area is relevant Saline history on this day. [2] If so, why—? ....

Year-end Washtenaw Economic Club lunch presentation connected with community leaders on value of diversity

Where does one begin a talk on diversity before a local business leaders luncheon? Featured speaker Marlin G Williams was presumably chosen by Washtenaw Economic Club leadership for her professional expertise, with requisite summary in promotional materials, then more generously endorsed when she was introduced yesterday by Washtenaw Community College President Dr Rose Bellanca. [2-4] “Why is it important?” is a questions undoubtedly on the mind of some. Is it practical if even possible to gain a ....

This Independence Day, Some Will Choose To Once Again Remember The Military Service Of Captain Daniel Throop

July 4, 2018
There’s a nondescript cemetery on the northeast corner where Judd Road ends at Saline-Milan Road. It isn’t clear if any particular place has been designated for visitor parking, nor, for that matter, if there’s much demand for one. In all the years that we’ve looked in on it, however, we’ve never found grass or grounds lacking in very attentive care. Quite matter-of-factly, a sign designates it as “Judd Cemetery,” further noting that it was formally ....

Things were hopping at the Humane Society of Huron Valley this weekend. If this was an article about the expanded communities of which Saline is part, we’d point out the HSHV is only 15 miles northeast of downtown. Think of it as the cultural home for “dog people” in our community. [1,2] How about Rebel Dogs Detroit? Bill Crispin Chevrolet dealership introduced them to Saline Journal readers during its “Pickups for Paws” event last June? ....

Air Zoo Museum Is an Ideal Place to Hone Aircraft Photography Skills

April 28, 2017
Aviation history makes for both important subject matter and photographic challenges. It’s easy to find postcards featuring military aircraft. But it’s often quite difficult to find good ones. Thankfully the challenge was made easier yesterday due to a cooperative effort between the Portage (Kalamazoo area) Air Zoo and Norman Camera called Photo Safari. Air Zoo “features more than 50 rare and historic aircraft, amusement park-style rides, Full-Motion Flight Simulators, [and] RealD 3D/4D Missions Theater ….” ....
