If you’re an alert user of social media, you’ve no doubt seen those hashtags on Twitter ending with “Day” somewhere in the trending topics box. A lot feel like unabashed marketing. Some provide nice excuses to reconnect or indulge outings with loved ones. And a few are very helpful reminders for things we’d really like not to forget.
“National Thrift Shop Day” may be considered in the same mindset as “National Nonprofit Day,” concurrently being recognized on August 17, 2017. As Dorkys Ramos wrote yesterday for inhabitat, this is a day that encourages “everyone to support their local thrift stores and score secondhand goods.” Moreover, it may be taken “a step further by bringing awareness to the day’s charitable component and reminding us why it would do a world of good if we went the thrift store route instead of buying brand new.” [1]
Second-hand stores are for everyone. Think about what our own stores here in Saline mean to the community:
Thrift stores provide some with a means through which to assist others by providing used clothing and household items that can be bought by others at cheaper prices.
Thrift stores can be the means by which the life cycles of many goods can be greatly extended, easing the landfill burdens for extended periods of time.
Eastgate Saline offers several options to consider.
Salvation Army has a store located at 423 East Michigan Avenue, across the parking lot behind CVS. The local Goodwill Industries store can be found at 557 East Michigan Avenue, in the shopping area adjacent to Busch’s Fresh Food Market. Also consider Nu2U, 1311 East Michigan Avenue, in the center where Emagine Theater serves as anchor. All are open now and well into the hours after dinnertime tonight. [2,3,4]
Don’t feel restricted by the day: The value of shopping at second-hand stores in Saline is happening year round.
But if you visit any of these stores today, be sure to make note of it using this hashtag with a Twitter update: #NationalThriftShopDay
