Last weekend, Camaro Superfest marked its eleventh year at Riverside Park in Ypsilanti — the third venue and now comfortably established as home since the first in 1992.
By the numbers, 650 Camaros were shown this year, with participants coming from fifteen states and Canada. Promoted as “the longest running, largest, most charitable and friendliest all Camaro event in the USA!”
Without making a checklist, it certainly seemed like every year and reasonable variation of was represented here. More than that, the cars and owners were quite accessible. If you’re interested in nuanced discussions of Camaro history, this was your place. Equally at home were those whose focus was exclusively and extensively under the hood.
Just like the looks and lines? This was your show too.
A lot of thought, planning, and preparation clearly went into making this an exciting event as well. “Car shows” can sometimes feel not sufficiently more than museum gallery displays since any parked vehicle is by definition short of fulfilling its purpose.
Not here. Even those who didn’t make it to programmed off-site activities invariably saw Camaros in motion about Riverside Park. Sometimes for judging queues. Other times arriving or departing at almost any time of the day. Search “camaro superfest 2017” for video examples.
Organizers also emphasize the worthy causes they support as much as the cars. In 2017, donations hit $15,000 as part of the total of approximately $67,000 during the past ten years. In total, nearly $105,000 has been raised over the course of the show history.
