Businesses are asked to support causes every day and so many give generously with money, product donations, by providing space, and making employees available to volunteer.
More touching still are those less common situations where the need served feels like it beats in the heart of the benefactor organization and its people. They give because they believe.
This was particularly important for the “Pickups for Paws” dog adoption event held by Bill Crispin Chevrolet last Saturday. Think about it. We have a fantastic Humane Society of Huron Valley shelter that’s well established and serving our community. Why bring in dogs rescued through Friends of Detroit Animal Care & Control? [1,2,3]
“Because that’s where we found the greatest need for our event,” Bill Crispin Chevy Sales Manager Jim Freemon told Saline Journal. He went on to explain the hard work that’s gone into moving that rescue to where something like sixty percent of all dogs they take in are eventually placed in loving homes. It wasn’t that long ago that alost all of their animals had to end up being euthanized. [4]
Anywhere else you might think it would be enough to open doors to one established rescue, used to setting up and managing an event within spaces offered. But when new startup Rebel Dogs Detroit because interested in coming as well — learning by doing here — the dealership moved additional vehicles out of its showroom so they could open their doors that much wider. [5]
It’s no secret that most of the dogs were what Friends of Detroit Animal Care & Control characterizes as “short-coated, blocky-headed, 50-pound dogs.” They “label them ‘pit bulls,'” and we strongly agree with their statement that “visual identification of breed is pretty impossible ….” On top of that, any adoption event is bound to add stressors of travel and the confusion of unfamiliar surroundings not at issue for people considering pets housed in fixed locations. Special care has to be taken that dogs of this type in particular not be entrusted to anyone with a mind for any purpose other than to provide a loving home. Everyone we saw involved in Saline “Pickups for Paws” last Saturday gets that; like us, they’re clearly all dog people. [8]
By the end of the offering, three dogs had been adopted, which is impressive. “Neopawliton” was the first, as revealed on the clearly dog-friendly Bill Crispin Chevrolet Twitter feed on June 16. Neopawliton is an eight-month-old labrador mix. The other two successes were both bully-type breeds: “Hardy” and “Pumpin.” [9]
