Kevin Camero-Sulak is one of four candidates running to serve on Saline City Council starting in January of 2020. Three seats are up for election on the upcoming November 5, 2019 ballot. [1]

Earlier this month, Saline Journal invited each individual to share his thoughts with our readers on a specific series of questions. Responses from Mr Camero-Sulak appear below. Responses from the other candidates will appear in separate articles this week.

Saline Journal: “What would you list as your top four priorities for Saline City Council in 2020?”

Kevin Camero-Sulak:

  • Serving the best interests of our citizens while maintaining our small town appeal
  • Improving our existing infrastructure and planned expansion using best practices
  • Advocating for timely communications and transparency for our community
  • Promote affordable housing and fiscal responsibility

Saline Journal: “Is there a ‘proper’ length of time for a member of City Council to serve? If so, how long would you recommend, and why?”

Kevin Camero-Sulak: “City council members should be judged by how well they represent the citizens of Saline rather than how long they have served. The voting public will decide come election time.”

Saline Journal: “Reconcile the following aspects of Saline: Autonomous shuttle assembly, downtown car shows, new car dealerships.”

Kevin Camero-Sulak: “Cars, the ownership and purchase of, are an important part of our society today and one we can’t really do without.

In a perfect world we would have a robust public transportation system that would lessen the burden that crude oil creates on our planet. However, we aren’t there yet. Cars have opened up worlds we never would have thought possible just a century ago. But that doesn’t mean we can’t improve on our transportation options.

Beyond this, I would need to spend a longer time researching things like autonomous shuttle assembly.

Saline Journal: “To what extent, in what ways is it appropriate for members of City Council to participate in locally-oriented Facebook Groups?”

Kevin Camero-Sulak: “If it is decided that city council members are not to engage with the public on social media platforms then I will respect that.

I see pros and cons of council members engaging via forums such as Facebook. In general, face-to-face communication is always best. However, with competing priorities and schedules, sometimes communicating on social media is the only way some constituents can reach out to their elected officials.

Assuming the communication is respectful, I feel it is appropriate to respond to constituents via social media but to leave it at shorter, fact-based answers that end with an invitation to meet in person to hash out deeper details.”

Saline Journal: “How would you assess the City of Saline in terms of preparations for dealing with a mass casualty event?”

Kevin Camero-Sulak: “This is a question I would want to thoroughly discuss with public safety such as police and fire, and look to their guidance in answering.”

Saline Journal: “Which park would you choose for an October weekend campout with your least-outdoorsy relative? Explain.”

Kevin Camero-Sulak: “This is an interesting question and although I’m curious, I’m not sure how it relates to a candidate interview. I love all of our parks for different reasons and I’ll just leave it at that.”

Saline Journal: “If you could ask one question to the other three candidates, what would it be?”

Kevin Camero-Sulak: “Another interesting question that, on the onset, seems as if it is trying to pit us against each other. I’m sure that’s not your intention though.

I respectfully choose to not answer at this time, but am more than willing to dialogue with my fellow candidates at the appropriate time and place.”
