Whether you need to set the alarm or may already be en route to the links for your own game, Michigan Golf Live! is where your radio should be tuned any time between 6:00am and 8:00am on Saturdays. [1]

Locally, this program begins its nineteenth year on the air by adding AM 1600 to its list of affiliates — coinciding with the start of a new season on May 5. Add to that the return of the LPGA Volvik Championship in less than three weeks and no one could argue better timing. [2,3]

Saline Journal caught up with program creator and host Bill Hobson to get a more personal perspective.

“Michigan has the second most courses per capita in the United States,” he began. “This show is an opportunity to celebrate that and get into it. People say, ‘Golf develops character.’ How is that? It demands practice. It demands honesty. You can’t pretend to play golf.

“That’s got to be why golfers are doing the best interviews in sports. There are no guaranteed contracts. So there’s a constant demand on golfers at a professional level to get better.”

His time covering the sport in this way has given Mr Hobson the unique opportunity for perspectives on both the individuals and the game here in Michigan as viewed over time.

“We’ve seen an evolution of the athlete-golfer, training the body for rigors of the game. Tiger Woods introduced the concept of training for the challenges of golf.”

He was quick to credit the LPGA Volvik Championship as having “rekindled” a strong passion for golf in Michigan, going on to praise Amy and Keith Karbo by name for this. “Volvik attracts a great field of players,” Bill Hobson told Saline Journal. “It’s good for golf in this state.

“There are even rumors the PGA might be back.”

AM 1600 News and Operations Manager Dan Martin anticipates that Michigan Golf Live! will make a fine addition to the WAAM program schedule, which is designed to serve a variety of listener interests.

Be sure to check out the premier of this program tomorrow and decide for yourself.
