The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has nothing on us! [1]
With Saline’s Christmas Parade just over a week away, today we are remembering that event from the eighth time it was held — in 1983.
The photograph above shows downtown East Michigan Avenue, facing more or less south toward the intersection at Hall Street.
Perhaps the most striking difference between then and now is our local Post Office, where J Andrew Financial and Saline Area Chamber of Commerce are located. Bigger picture, the overall Merchant Square facade had yet to come about. [2,3]
Our own local business was less than three months old when the Chamber encouraged us to drive our 1960 Ford Falcon coupe in the parade. Ford Motor Company has a rich history here, including an Instrument and Plastics Plant it then operated in the City of Saline. [4,5]
The 2016 reconstruction of US-12 added a median behind where you see our car in this photograph, in front of the First Presbyterian Church. [6]
How many other differences can you spot versus what we’ll see on December 2 during Salines Christmas Parade for 2017?
Happy Thanksgiving!
