Could Just One Photograph Fully Capture Whole of a Months-Long Historical Event?

November 1, 2016 Dell Deaton

The question in this headline goes to the essence of photojournalism. [1,2] The photograph above was taken last summer during the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Michigan Avenue (US 12) reconstruction project in downtown Saline. ….

If Those With Growing Needs Do Not Ask, And Those In A Position To Give Are Not Doing So, What Must Change?

July 2, 2018
From the Editor— This past Saturday, I spent a couple of hours at the Saline History Museum. No “Independence Day” event, as that had been cancelled late on Thursday prior due to extreme heat forecasts. Notwithstanding, the museum was still open per weekly routine. [1] Visitor numbers appeared to be up a bit, at the caboose, shed, and inside the depot itself. At one point I spent quite a while sitting down with Bob Lane ....

Saline Celtic Festival Kilts Can Help Improve Relationships with Local Law Enforcement

And then there is the annual Saline Celtic Festival ....

It’s hard to say what the thinking was when word came out on March 15 that President Donald Trump had been scheduled to headline a rally two weeks later in Grand Rapids. [1,2] Incredibly, when the appointed day and time finally came about last night, the United States chief executive had within the days prior marked two of his most significant victories in office. His first ever veto was sustained, both substantively and symbolically advancing ....

Not a trick question: Look closely at this local Scouts BSA troop photograph; see if you can spot anything different about it

February 11, 2019
The Boy Scouts of America has a well established process for starting new “Units.” Most familiar are Cub Scout “Packs” for youth in kindergarten through fifth grade crossover, and Scout “Troops” based on age, starting at ten or eleven, until the participant’s eighteenth birthday. [1-7] Two weeks ago, Troop 439 held its first meeting as another among the more recent additions to this 109-year legacy. That Monday, February 4, largely passed without fanfare or note. ....
