2018 FIRST Robotics Championship in Detroit Michigan

What’s Missing from This Image of the 2018 FIRST Robotics Championship in Detroit?

May 3, 2018
The photograph above was taken last week during Tech Challenge brackets at Cobo Center in Detroit for the latest FIRST Robotics Championship. Teams at each of four age-based skill levels had advanced to this arena over the course of the 2017-18 school year, to these final play-offs featuring robots that they themselves have built and programmed. [1,2] Anyone who’s heard of Lego Mindstorms is in the ballpark of understanding this world. “FIRST Lego League Jr” ....

Saline Singularity robotics team met today, and week 3 focused on its “business” as much as anything else

January 26, 2019
As the clock approached nine this morning, several members of FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 5066 had already started arriving. In several instances, coffee mugs in hand. Someone had thoughtfully brought two boxes of fresh donut holes. [1,2] Other than having meeting space in one of the Saline High School CTE program classrooms, populated here by students, sub-team leads, and mentors, this Saline Singularity gathering could have passed for any other mainstream business meeting. It’s ....

April 3, 2019
Per routine, the final agenda item for the seventy-eight minute Saline City Council meeting this past Monday was an invitation to hear citizen comments. One resident, after stepping to the microphone, introducing himself and stating that he has “lived here just about a year,” closed with focus on the former Hoover Universal Die Casting Division site off Monroe Street. [1] I know that the history of the site on Monroe Street that’s under control of ....

Air Zoo Museum Is an Ideal Place to Hone Aircraft Photography Skills

April 28, 2017
Aviation history makes for both important subject matter and photographic challenges. It’s easy to find postcards featuring military aircraft. But it’s often quite difficult to find good ones. Thankfully the challenge was made easier yesterday due to a cooperative effort between the Portage (Kalamazoo area) Air Zoo and Norman Camera called Photo Safari. Air Zoo “features more than 50 rare and historic aircraft, amusement park-style rides, Full-Motion Flight Simulators, [and] RealD 3D/4D Missions Theater ….” ....
