With the actual anniversary of “Juneteenth” less than a week away, Brendel Hightower of Detroit Free Press has published a list of “Juneteenth events in metro Detroit” — including “films, food, music and shopping” — that have already started taking place, running through June 20, 2021.
“Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, is an annual holiday to celebrate equal rights and freedom of slaves in the United States,” he noted in his piece, published earlier today.
On June 19, 1865, federal troops freed the remaining slaves in Texas, enforcing the Emancipation Proclamation, a full 2½ years after its signing.
Celebrations and events will be held in southeast Michigan, and include supporting and shopping at Black-owned businesses, award ceremonies, music, films, food and live entertainment to acknowledge what’s considered the longest-running African American holiday ….
