Be Prepared to Make Uncommon Photographs Before, During, and after Rainfall

December 29, 2014
The phrase “rained out” is typically perjorative. At once it describes both a weather situation plans to be cancelled. This needn’t be the case when eying outdoor photographs. In fact, periods just after rain has fallen will often lend added interest to subject matter, reveal otherwise hidden character, or encourage an entirely altered center of attention. The Davenport-Curtiss House on East Michigan Avenue in Saline is one such example. Built in 1875, it remains a ....

How to Decide When a Digital Photograph Should be Presented in Black and White

September 18, 2017
With the growing sophistication of Instagram and iPhone filters, photographers of all skill levels are chosing to post more of their images in black and white (B&W) on social media. Add to that the upcoming sixth annual Saline Scarecrow Contest scheduled to run next month and you have a past entry that nicely supports this discussion. Here, it’s The Tin Woodman from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L Frank Baum and WW Denslow, 1899. ....

Arrival of COVID-19 in Michigan made for a different sort of “Coffee Hour” with Brian Marl and Donna Lasinski

March 13, 2020
Initial impressions of scheduled “Coffee Hour” held this morning in City Council Chambers would have found this hardly different from any other here. [1,2] Hosted by our Saline Mayor Brian Marl, accompanied by District 52 Michigan House Representative Lasinski, a lone podium was set in its usual spot — facing the dais. Table nearby with stacks of various, neatly stapled handouts. Familiar chairs for the audience, neatly lined chair-to-chair in rows. Typical. [3,4] And yet ....

June 27, 2011
Two days ago, several Boy Scouts from Saline Troop 446 attached to a blended Unit in Port Huron headed to Mackinaw City and marched off for weeklong service on Mackinac Island. [1] They’ll be there all this week as part of the “Governor’s Honor Guard,” which was started in 1929. The Mackinac Island Insider Tips website nicely summarizes this tour of duty. [2,3] These dedicated troops serve as guides at Fort Mackinac and State Park ....

This June, Get as Close to “Mystery Science Theater 3000” on the Big Screen as 2018 Will Allow

May 29, 2018
Imagine you were in high school, or perhaps college in the 1990s. You and your regular group of friends end up at one of the parents’ houses after a late evening out, turn on the TV to, what? likely one of the UHF stations out of Detroit. The only available programming consists of low-budget, truly awful, never-should-have-been-made movies produced decades earlier. With that, everyone settles in on the couch and begins attentively watching — talking ....
