While it’s true that there are other holiday favorites, few likely expand definition of the Christmas movie genre (and audience) like the original Die Hard from 1988, starring Bruce Willis. Thanks again to Fathom Events, it returns to the big screen at Emagine Theatre Saline with four showings. [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11]
- November 11 (Sunday), with showings starting at 2:00pm and 7:00pm
- November 14 (Wednesday), with showings starting at 2:00pm and 7:00pm
Plot summary on IMDb: “John McClane, officer of the NYPD, tries to save his wife Holly Gennaro and several others that were taken hostage by German terrorist Hans Gruber during a Christmas party at the Nakatomi Plaza in Los Angeles.” True enough. But with Bruce Willis in the lead here, look forward to a perfect blend of plot and action, nicely influenced by his wisecracking Moonlighting David Addison character. [12]
Earlier this year, Scott Tobias reviewed Die Hard for The Guardian characterizing McClane as “an unlikely savior in 1988 and despite endless attempts to recycle the formula, he remains without equal in the genre.” Mr Tobias gets it. But the official thirtieth anniversary trailer does an even better job of giving the movie an opportunity to speak for itself. [13,14]
For those who have never seen it before, this is an opportunity to catch up on much of the deliciously quotable dialogue that continues to referenced modern-day. But be prepared to have mental connections with a number of Christmas songs forever recast.
